Anza vs Taghazout: Where Should You Stay and Surf?

Anza and Taghazout sit along the Atlantic coast around Agadir, but staying in each place can create a different travel experience.

If you are deciding between them, the right choice depends less on which name is more famous and more on the kind of trip you want.

GoSurfNature is based in Anza, so our perspective begins there — while recognizing the important place Taghazout holds in Morocco's surf culture.

What is Anza like?

Anza is a lived-in neighborhood on the Agadir coast.

Surfing is part of the area, but daily life is not organized only around visitors. Local families, shops, young surfers and the wider community remain visible around the experience.

For travelers who want to stay close to Agadir while spending time in a local environment, that can be part of the appeal.

GoSurfNature grew from this community, which is why Anza remains our home base.

What is Taghazout like?

Taghazout has an international reputation as a surf destination.

Its compact center contains accommodation, cafés and a highly visible traveler and surf community.

For many people planning their first Morocco surf trip, Taghazout is already familiar before they arrive.

That reputation creates a different atmosphere from Anza.

Which is better for surfing?

There is no responsible answer that says one place is always better.

Surfing depends on conditions and ability.

A beginner needs a suitable learning environment. An intermediate surfer may be working on progression. An experienced surfer may be looking for something completely different.

The ocean on the day should influence the decision more than a destination label.

Which feels more local?

Anza generally gives the GoSurfNature experience a stronger connection to our own neighborhood and community.

That is one reason we chose it as the project's base.

But “local” should not become a marketing costume.

Visitors are still guests. Respecting residents and shared spaces matters in every coastal community.

Which has more of a traveler scene?

Taghazout on Morocco's Atlantic surf coast

Taghazout is the more internationally established surf-travel name.

Travelers who want to be surrounded by a visible surf tourism scene may naturally be attracted to it.

People who prefer a home base connected to a broader local neighborhood may find Anza more aligned with what they want.

Do you need to choose only one?

No.

This is the part we think is often missed.

Anza and Taghazout are close enough to belong to the same wider coastal journey. Staying in Anza does not prevent you from discovering Taghazout.

You can experience different personalities without changing accommodation every night.

What about Agadir?

Agadir remains an important reference point for the whole area.

Its transport connections, urban services and beach destination identity make it useful to travelers even when their surf experience is based farther along the coast.

Anza keeps you connected to Agadir while moving the center of the experience closer to local surf life.

What about Imsouane?

Imsouane is a different kind of journey farther north.

Rather than comparing all three places as substitutes, we prefer thinking of the coast as connected chapters.

Anza can be home. Taghazout can be explored along the coast. Imsouane can become a larger road-trip day inside a longer experience.

Choosing your base

Ask yourself what you want to feel when you wake up.

Do you want the atmosphere of an internationally recognized surf village? Do you want to stay closer to a local neighborhood? Are you planning one lesson or several days of surfing and exploration?

Those questions are more useful than asking which destination wins.

Explore our Surf page if the ocean is your priority. If you want accommodation, surfing and the wider Atlantic experience together, the Packages page shows the current multi-day options.
